Imagine launching a new platform to connect your team, only to find out it’s being retired a month later. That’s exactly what happened to SkyCity Entertainment Group when Meta announced they were discontinuing Workplace.

With teams spread across entertainment, hospitality, and corporate roles in multiple locations, SkyCity needed a solution to maintain the momentum and positive culture shift they’d already built.

From Launch to Unexpected Turn

We’d been SkyCity’s partner from the start, helping them launch Workplace. So, when they faced this unexpected situation, we helped them look at all their options and find the best platform for what they needed now and in the future.

“Navigating the retirement of Workplace can feel overwhelming, especially with so many choices. At VMG, we listen, we assess, and we help you find a clear path to a solution that works for today and scales for tomorrow.”

Connecting SkyCity's On-the-Go Teams

Because SkyCity had only just got its 4,500+ employees up and running on Workplace when Meta made their announcement, finding a replacement that felt familiar was a top priority.

Enter Workvivo by Zoom.

Sure, Workvivo looks a bit like Workplace, but the real win is how flexible it is. You can tweak it to fit your exact needs. For SkyCity, that meant setting it up to look and feel like Workplace, making the switch smoother.

Plus, Workvivo’s mobile-first design was perfect for connecting their frontline and distributed teams. It’s visual, easy to use, and fits their dynamic work environment.

Keep, Archive, or Move?

We created a clear transition plan to keep things moving and minimise any disruptions, highlighting Workvivo’s plus points and how to move their data smoothly so they wouldn’t miss a beat.

Workplace and Workvivo have joined forces to create a tool that makes moving data between platforms easy. For SkyCity, who had just set up their Workplace structure, a full migration was the best way to go.

💡 If you’ve been on Workplace longer, we suggest taking a good look at what you’re using, how well it’s working, and how engaged people are so you can figure out what to move, archive, or leave behind. We can guide you through this assessment, developing a migration strategy tailored to your needs.

Making Sure Everyone’s Included

Every SkyCity employee – whether they’re at a desk, dealing cards, or plating up – needed to access Workvivo. And we made sure even those without corporate emails or desktop access could get in and manage their own passwords. That’s a win for them, and one less headache for IT!

Tailoring Workvivo for SkyCity’s Teams

With access sorted, we teamed up with Workvivo and SkyCity’s IT and Comms teams to set up employee profiles. This way, the platform could be customised for their diverse workforce, making sure content was targeted and delivered effectively, just like on Workplace.

  • One profile, many roles: Employees with multiple roles get a single Workvivo profile.
  • Smart, automatic groups: New employees join the right groups based on their job and location, saving the Comms team time.
  • Right info, right place: Key company info and HR resources are available on mobile devices, with information only accessible to those it is relevant to.

Launch Time!

In March, almost a year after the Workplace launch, SkyCity employees logged into Workvivo.

And there it was: all their Workplace content, waiting for them. It looked fresh, but all the familiar groups, chats, comments, pictures, and files were there. It was like picking up where they left off.

From day one, the SkyCity Comms team went all-in, driving engagement and excitement. They ensured the executive team were visible on the platform, leading by example, and identified ‘champions’ across the organisation, giving them training and early access to become enthusiastic advocates. They also created engaging collateral and ran competitions, ensuring everyone was involved from the start.

The timing of Workplace’s exit was tough, but SkyCity turned it around. We’ve even heard it’s “better than Workplace!

It’s been a pleasure helping SkyCity through this, and we’re excited to see their vibrant employee culture thrive on Workvivo.
